The wonderful world of Akihiro Furuta

While browsing the Medium Format Flickr group pool , looking at the usual portraits that medium format excels at, a thumbnail of a photo caught my eye with it’s vivid colours and wonderful subjects.   The photographer was Akihiro Furuta .  The subjects of most of his photographs are his family-his wife, son, and dog!   The photos just perfectly capture the sense of fun the family are having while getting a good photo is just an added benefit.

On days where I’m feeling blue, I just look at his photostream and get an immediate pick-me-up.  The photo of the family celebrating the dog’s birthday is probably my favourite photo on the whole of flickr, there is just something absurdly joyous about the whole thing! His photos are not just happy-happy-strange pics either, his other side shows a sensitivity towards his family that feels rarely captured in this digital age (see ‘is a son a barber?‘ for an example.)

Some examples (unfortunately no longer linked from his flickr, as it appears he has removed himself from there, so now linked to his blog).

Unfortunately, it appears Akhiro has removed himself from flickr. But you can still get your fix on his blog:

Fun in the Sun-Printing

Some time late last year (OK, Christmas), I got a present called “Sun-Print Paper”. This stuff is basically sold as a “toy” to parents who probably want their kids to get off their console, get out the house, and take in some Sunshine or else.

How to make Cog-Pano’s on your Holga

First things first. The image above was shot on my Holga, and I only manipulated digitally by way of turning it black & white and adding my copyright symbol. Otherwise, this is shown exactly as it was shot, with the image stretching its way across the film plain in a nice wide panoramic and covering [...]
