May 1st: International Commie Camera Day 2009

Translation: We love our cameras. Soviet cameras are strong, like ox.

Translation: Comrades, Soviet cameras are strong, like ox.

Fellow Comrades,

Comrade General inetjoker on Flickr has declared International Commie Camera Day.

I’ll let him take over:

On May 1st 2009 you go out and shoot a roll or as many as you want with any camera built in the FSU. I will even allow Chinese Seagulls but nothing from Lomography except real Soviet cameras. And let us not forget those Great DDR cameras and any camera from the Warsaw Pack. Also you can use Seagull TLR cameras and Great Wall cameras.

Use those old Folders Feds etc.

This is a safe group so post accordingly

I hope we have a fun day this year so start thinking.

So, stick two fingers up at Joseph McCarthy and go join The Flickr Group where you get to become a ‘party member’ (with moderators being ‘Factory Bosses’).

Sam: I didn’t have a commie cam either. I’ve been wanting a commie cam, this event gave me the push to go out and buy one. Now I’m a proud owner of a Fed 50. Not a whole of frills, but a thrilling camera nonetheless.

Derek: You only need one commie cam – and you don’t even have to spend that much money for it. Go for it.

The International Commie Camera Day group on Flickr has turned up a lot of interesting personalities and even more tongue-in-cheek humor. It’s been a lot of fun hanging out there. That, and seeing all the communist-built beauties our fellow “comrades” own – that’s a sight! (Not for the weak willed – you will no doubt want to buy ones of your own.)

So take hold of your “strong like ox” commie cam. Boast of its nefarious history. Be a part of the, uh, movement….yah!

Hey, also in Germany + Europe people are joining the movement – if you don’t have or afford your own CommieCam ask your friend, ask your parents, ask everybody, ask the member of the CommieCamDay! There are more CommieCams as you think! Unbreakable!
    There will be friends, comrades!
Join and enjoy the thrilling FSU hardware for real photos made by real people!
Big event, big movement, big idea and (main point) GREAT friends joining a great FUN! :-)
Digital was yesterday – CommieCam is now! Step foreward!

FSU cameras are something every film enthusiast should try at least once.

In my case I had a choice between a Zorki-2 or FED-3 because I was buying at a local bricks-and-mortar. I ended up picking the FED because, while it didn’t look as good, the shutter actually appeared to work.

Turns out it doesn’t (second curtain runs too fast and catches up), but oh well. It’s still a lovely camera and the slow speeds work, so with a tripod and a few NDs ICCD is still a go for me.

And being an LTM camera, the Industar-50 that came with it is all ready to end up on a working body.

Actually, I should talk to my friend with the Kiev-60. That could be fun.

I started my foray into vintage cameras with Russian stock and must say, I love every last one of them. They take fan-freakin’-tastic pictures and for the money, you really can’t buy a finer camera. Check out the Flickr group and if that doesn’t convince you, check out my blog–Lo-fi Photography: the low down. Commie Cams rock!!

You can always build a home from the cameras…… Every time my kids come to visit they say.. “I see you have more cameras and film” I reply “Not more just the same amount plus some.” *giggle*

Any of you decided on your weapon of choice for ICCD09? Kinda leaning towards Smena Symbol, Practika MTL5B, Kiev-4, maybe a FED myself.

  15. Posted by Andrew(Admin) on March 26th, 2009, 07:47 (Reply to this comment)

I’m thinking my FED2 as the weapon-of-choice, although I will be at work on ICCD09 so possibly may just use the lubitel 2 so I only need to take 12 frames ;-)

    Any Suggestions? It’s out of:

    FED2
    Lubitel 2
    Praktica TL1000
    Smena Symbol
    Zenit E

So, just to make sure I don’t get excited for nothing, it’s ok to use an original Diana clone since they were made by Great Wall? Just wanted to clarify :)
